The clothing workpieces are moved along by a conveyor mechanism comprising a support unit (18) which is fitted with a carriage system (20) which can move linearly relative to the attachment unit (11) (applying the buttons etc.). A workpiece holder unit which is designed to move with the carriage system comprises a holder with grasping part (23) for grapsing part of the workpiece. A second workpiece holder is mounted at a distance from the first and a second clamp mechanism (24) grasps another part of the workpiece. A pneumatically operating system is also provided to move one of the holders linearly relative to the other so as to bias the workpiece for receiving the buttons.
