The belt grinder is for sanding smooth workpieces, having an endless grinder belt running over three or more rollers, one of which is driven. An elastic pressure beam extends over the entire working width and is composed of a number of parts individually raised and lowered. Opposite the grinder belt working face is a conveyor belt for the workpieces. The beam has a bracket extending for the entire working width, on which the parts, in the form of pressure shoes are mounted. The shoes have small pressure plates supported on corresponding individual lifting hoses. Above each plate is a triangular lever rocking on the bracket and which when the hose is inflated is actuated by a lever acting on the shoe.
