PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound, intermediate for the preparation of e.g. engineering resins, tetrahydrofuran etc., inexpensively and with high electivity, by the reaction of a monoepoxide of 1,3-conjugated diene with water in the presence of hydroiodic acid. CONSTITUTION:A monoepoxide of 1,3-conjugated diene of formula I (R1, R2, R3, R4=H, hydrocarbon residue; R1 and R4 may cyclize binding each other.), e.g. 3,4-epoxy-1-butene, 3.4-epoxy-3-methyl-1-butene etc., and water are allowed to react at -10-200 deg.C in the presence of hydroiodic acid and a transition-metal compound, e.g. Y, La, or Ce to afford a 2-butene-1,4-diol derivative of formula II. |
