PURPOSE:To obtain byruvic acid industrially economically in one stage, by oxidizing hydroxyacetone with a gas containing oxygen in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. ruthenium, etc. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxyacetone, obtained as a by-product in the preparation of phenol by the cumene method, is oxidized in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium, rhodium, or rhenium in an aqueous solution at room temperature to 100 deg.C under a pressure of atmospheric one to 10kg/cm<2> to give pyruvic acid. The pH of the reaction mixture is neutral or weakly basic by subsequent addition of the necessary alkaline substance. Preferably, the hydroxyacetone concentration in the aqueous solvent is 1-30 wt.%, and 0.1-20 wt.% of the catalyst component is supported on a carrier. USE:An intermediate for metabolism pathways in vivo, raw material for physiologically active material , and L-tryptophan, L-cysteine, and L-tyrosine. |
