The novel 4-(7-bromo-5-methoxybenzofuran-2-yl)-1-methyl- 1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-pyridine of the formula I <IMAGE> is obtained by partial reduction of 4-(7-bromo-5-methoxybenzofuran- 2-yl)-1-methylpyridinium salts. The compound of the formula I can be converted into its acid addition salts. These novel substances have pharmacological properties characteristic of antidepressants; the selective, reversible inhibition of the A form of monoamine oxidase is particularly to be emphasized.
