An enzymically degradable form of poly(N-acety1-D-glucosamine) (chitin) served as a matrix for controlled release of drugs, esp. in the eyes. Degradable forms also included poly(N-acety1-6-O-carboxymethy1-D-glucosamine), Poly[N-acety1-6-0-(2-hydroxyethy1)-D- gluconsamine), and poly(N-acety1-6-0-ethy1-D-gluconsamine). Films were prepd. from ag. solns. suitable solvents for chitin were hexafluoracetone secquihydrate and hexafluoroisopropanol.
