The detector is used in the quantitative trace analysis of volatile substances. It comprises the three main sections, absorber, phase separator and measuring cell. The carrier gas, which contains ion-forming substances, and a liquid, for example water, are mixed in the absorption tube (1), and the ion-forming substances dissolve in the liquid. The phase separator is formed by the jacket tube (4), which is provided with a pipe connecting piece (7) for separating the carrier gas, and the drainage rod (8). At the end (6) of the absorption tube (1), the liquid containing the species to be analysed flows over the drainage rod (8) and strikes the inlet opening (12) of the feed capillary (10) for the measuring cell (13). The inlet opening (12) is completely flooded by the liquid and some of it collects in the collecting tube (17) and drains through the overflow (19). This structural design prevents, on the one hand, gas bubbles from penetrating the measuring cell (13). On the other hand, a liquid seal forms between jacket tube (4) and collecting tube (17) and separates the phase separation space from the external atmosphere. <IMAGE>
