A beta , beta , beta -trihalo- alpha -hydroxyethyl (e.g. -CHOH-CCl3) group is introduced into a 2,6-dihydroxy pyridine. The 3-formyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxy pyridine produced by splitting off haloform from the trihalohydroxyethyl product, is a desirable intermediate for the making of dyes and other products, and the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of the formyl compound are more stable forms of this intermediate.
