The panel element has a frame which comprises profiles (2, 3) and encloses the sound-insulating mat (32). The profiles (2, 3) are connected at the ends via in each case one corner angles (4), with the result that the height and width of the panel element is determined by the length of the profiles and can be easily adapted to the installation ratios. The profiles (2, 3) and the corner angle (4) are each screwed down by means of a screw (8, 9), the screw clamping the profile to the corner angle by means of a clamping plate (7). The screws (8, 9) are screwed in at right angles to the profile longitudinal axis, with the result that, in addition to fastening the corner angle to the profile, they are also used for fastening the panel elements to one another, this making it easier to assemble large sound-insulating surfaces. On the side directed away from the sound, the panel element has a continuous metal sheet (24) and, on the side directed towards the sound, it has a perforated metal sheet (25), in order to keep the sound-insulating mat (32), inserted between said sheets, in position and to protect it from being damaged. <IMAGE>
