The folding handle for a fishing rod reel is mounted on a spindle (5) by means of a pivot pin (4). The arm (2) carrying the handle ends in a hollow socket (3) through which the pin passes. The spindle passes through a barrel shaped sliding sleeve (8) with the interior at both ends tapering outwards giving a larger diameter at the open end. Between a flange (9) and a shoulder (15) on the spindle housing is a spring which tends to push the sleeve outwards towards the handle end of the spindle. The socket shaped part (3) of the handle arm is tapered to fit inside the outer tapered interior (10) of the sleeve when pushed outwards by the spring.
