[Also in Division C7] Scrap iron 5 is fed to guides 4, 14 where it is compressed between movable pistons 7 and a displaceable metal diaphragm (not shown) to form packs 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP> of constant cross-section e.g. circular, trapezoidal or rectangular; the packs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are advanced along the guides 4, 14 by the pistons 7 so that they are heated to between 1000‹ and 1200‹ C. by oil or gas burners 8; an arc is struck between the ends of the packs 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP> and the melted metal falls into an inclined transverse channel 3 and flows under gravity into a collecting vat 12. The arc is initiated by an auxiliary electrode or ionised air. A threephase furnace is disclosed as well as the single phase one shown.</p> |
