A filter for use in an automotive exhaust system to remove particulate carbon and/or other solids from hot exhaust gas includes a metal casing 10 enclosing a mass 19 of wire wool or wire mesh whose periphery is bonded to the casing wall to support the mass under high temperature operation. The bonding is achieved by sintering under a hydrogen atmosphere and also results in some bonding within the mass itself. The mass 19 may be coated with alumina and catalyst.
