The machine punches out characters in a strip of material to a 7 x 5 pattern. It has seven punches in a row at right angles to the direction in which the strip is indexed forward under them. A keyboard with the characters to be punched is connected to a display unit and a memory unit. A processing unit obtains its data from the memory unit and operates the punches and the indexing motor. Monitoring and safety devices are included. When one of the keys is pressed, an interrupt signal can be transmitted to the processing unit from the memory unit, being at the same time shown on the display unit.
