Stereospecific catalyst for polymerisation of - alpha olefins

The polymerisation occurs in the presence of H2 or H2 and C2H4, with a catalyst consisting of a combination of:- A. An organo aluminium halide R3Al2X3 or RAlX2 where R is a C 1-12 hydrocarbyl, (alkyl, aryl or aralkyl) and X is Cl, Br or I. B. An organic phosphorus compound R'n P(OR")3-n where R' and R" are Cl-12 hydrocarbyl (alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl) and n is 1-2. C. A composition containing Al, Ti and Cl as titanium trichloride and aluminium trichloride. Known catalyst can give high proportions of atactic polymer which must be extracted as it causes deterioration in properties. The new catalyst mixture is stereo-specific and produces polymer containing acceptable amounts of atactic polymer, giving more economic processing.
