[Also in Division C3] Substrates such as wood, glass, metal, paper and fabrics may be coated with lacquers comprising synthetic resins containing isocyanurate rings prepared by reacting one or more compounds which contain more than one isocyanate group with less than equivalent quantities of a compound which contains active hydrogen atoms and in the presence of a basic catalyst which contains at least two aromatic nuclei and at least one araliphatically bound tertiary amino function per molecule. The catalyst may be prepared by chloromethylation of suitable aromatic compounds followed by direct reaction with secondary amines or by treatment with cyanides, reduction and peralkylation, but is more preferably a condensation product of a polyvalent phenol, formaldehyde and a secondary amine. In a typical Example glass is coated with a solution in a mixture of ethyl acetate, butylacetate and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether of a polyisocyanurate obtained by cotrimerisation (to 50% of the theoretical NCO value) of toluylene-2,4-diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate, a polyester derived from trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, 1,3-butylene glycol and phthalic acid and a catalyst which is the condensation product of phenol, dimethylamine and formaldehyde.
