The apparatus comprises an assembly consisting of an X-ray source and an X-ray detector. The assembly is moved incrementally about the subject in steps of 360/n degrees, n being odd. This ensures that, at every position Pn of the assembly at which absorption information is derived, the detector does not occupy any position previously occupied by the source.
