<p>The main machine works as a brushless D.C. motor to start a gas turbine and then works as a synchronous generator. The rotor of the main machine is on a common shaft with the turbine, the exciter and the auxiliary generator. The main stator is connected to a switching network to provide the correct armature current during operation as a motor and the required output during operation as a generator. The field windings of the main rotor are fed through a rectifier on the shaft from the rotating armature of the exciter. The exciter stator has three windings which can be connected through a switching network either to an A.C. source or to a D.C. supply obtained from a permanent magnet auxiliary generator.</p> |
