The advancing mine support has a floor member carrying four vertical shafts (10) which have a roof member mounted on top. The verticals (10) are in pairs, with the advancing cylinder (14) passing centrally between each pair, between guide rods (15). Above this cylinder, and at right angles to it, are two setting cylinders (24) each between the two verticals of a pair. Each setting cylinder is positioned above two setting jaws (16, 17), one for each vertical. These jaws slide in guides (18) towards and away from the vertical shaft (10). Each jaw incorporates two parallel slots (19) through which pass bolts (20). Each jaw carries a pair of pressure pads (22) sloping at an angle to each other.
