A temporary support for a transfer printing process comprises an aluminium foil coated on at least one surface with a release coating of ethyl cellulose, and a design printed thereon. The transfer printing process comprises coating an aluminium foil with ethyl cellulose on at least one surface, printing a design on to the ethyl cellulose, superimposing the so-obtained temporary support and a final support, applying heat and/or pressure to the superimposed structure, and separating the temporary support from the final support which retains the printed design, the adherence of the material of the design to the temporary support being lower than its adherence to the final support. The final support may be a plastisol which is spread on to a prepared temporary support and allowed to gel before being separated from the temporary support. The ethyl cellulose release coating may include up to 10% by weight of octyl adipate. The aluminium foil may be backed with paper or a cellulosic or plastics film, for example of polyethylene or polypropylene. The design is preferably printed in inks based on vinyl resins, particularly copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. Examples of ink compositions are given, and include dispersions in vinyl resins of metals, titanium dioxide and numerous organic materials. A protective varnish may be applied to at least parts of the temporary support before the design is printed thereon, the varnish being transferred with the design. A transfer may be incorporated in a mould during moulding articles from plastisols. The design may be printed in multi-colour. |
