[Also in Division G1] A fluid vortex amplifier for measuring angular rate of rotation comprises a vortex chamber 23, Fig. 2 formed from plates 14,16 and an annular plate 17. A porous wall 18 is arranged in the chamber and fluid is supplied to the gap 22 between the members 17,18 and normally passes through the wall 18 as a radial flow to axial outlets 26, 27. When the amplifier rotates, vertical flow is induced in the chamber and an Archimedes type screw 29 directs more fluid to one of the outlets 26, 27 than the other depending upon the direction of flow. The pressure differential in the outlets is a measure of the rate of rotation and there pressures are fed as control signals to a fluid amplifier whose outputs are connected to opposed bellows which carry an indicator as in Fig. 5 (not shown). In a modification, tangential jets may be applied to the chamber to control the output and to eliminate the delay caused by the time of travel of the fluid through the chamber. Figs. 8-10 and 19-21 (not shown) show alternative scoop arrangements which may be used in place of the Archimedes screw. Fig. 15 shows one form of amplifier which while providing a differential pressure at the outlets 138,142 in response to rate of rotation as above, also provides an integral of this value by pressure pick off passages 146-154 which produce values of the static pressure at radial spaced positions in the vortex chamber. The signals may be combined with the rate signals if required as control signals of the fluid amplifier. In a modification, the top and bottom walls of the vortex chamber are porous and provide an average pressure of the pressure differences across the chamber. In a further modification Fig. 18 (not shown) the annular porous wall has orifices to direct a jet to the central outlets which is equivalent to the integral signal above while the jet is also affected by the remaining flow through the porous wall to provide a combined rate and integral output signal.
