In a method of erecting a flat folded tubular carton blank, a wall portion of the blank is drawn and bowed between spaced support members by at least one suction cup to partially open the blank and to ensure trouble-free separation of the carton walls by setting-up member(s). In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a flat folded carton blank is conveyed to an erecting station where suction cups 35 pull the underside of the blank downwardly against a breaker bar 34 and conveyor belts 23 passing around rolls 23d to bow the underside downwardly pulling the leading and trailing ends of the blank toward each other and thus bowing the upper carton side upwardly. With the carton thus partially opened, overhead opening elements 42 rotate into engagement with a trailing side panel 13 thereof to swing it through 90 DEG . Overbreak elements 52 thereafter engage the trailing side panel and swing it through another 90 DEG . In another embodiment, Fig. 6, suction cups 85 bow a portion of a panel 10 between walls 81, 82 before the suction cups 85 move with said walls 81, 82 to draw the blank past a breaker bar 75 and deposit it on a conveyor 90 in erect condition. <IMAGE> |
