1501892 Acetic acid, ethanol and acetaldehyde from synthesis gas UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 Jan 1975 [28 Jan 1974 16 Jan 1975] 3370/75 Heading C2C A synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is continuously contacted with a heterogeneous catalyst comprising rhodium metal at reaction conditions of temperature, pressure, gas composition and space velocity correlated to produce acetic acid, ethanol and/or acetaldehyde in an amount which is at least 50 weight per cent of the two or more carbon atom compounds produced by the reaction, wherein the specified two-carbon atom oxygenated compounds are at least 10 per cent of the reacted carbon atoms. Other products obtained include methane, methanol and minor amounts of other alcohols, aldehydes and esters. In some comparison tests it was observed that Pt or Pd on silica gave methanol. |
