1494674 Drive unit with lubricated bearing ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 30 Jan 1975 [6 Feb 1974] 4086/75 Heading F2A A rotary drive unit comprises drive means and a drive shaft with a bearing originally charged with heavy lubricant (such as grease) and requiring fresh lubricant at intervals, the drive means and bearing being arranged in a sealed housing 2 with the drive shaft 4 sealingly extending therefrom whereby the drive unit can be operated when submerged in a fluid (other than air), the bearing being situated in a lubrication path arranged between two transfer ports, means being provided for transferring at intervals fresh lubricant to the bearing via one port, during submerged use of the drive unit, exhausted lubricant being removable from the bearing via the other port. As shown (Fig. 1) the drive unit is part of a pump having an impeller 5 attached to a drive shaft 4. The lubrication system comprises an inlet 7 and an outlet 9 connected to a chamber 8 fitted with a non-return valve 13 and seals 11, 12. Lubricant may be supplied and withdrawn using a piston assembly (Fig. 2, not shown) or an elastic reservoir in a rigid outer reservoir to which pressure is applied (Fig. 3, not shown). |
