The electrolytic step may comprise deposition of metal, e.g. copper, chromium or nickle, (the grinding step following this), or anodization (the grinding step preceding this). Grinding may be carried out using brush or sponge rollers, or preferably a jet of electrolyte containing abrasive particles, e.g. iron powder, corundum or aluminium oxide, is impinged against the metal surface; pressure being produced, e.g. by a rotary pump or by inclusion of compressed air in the stream. As shown, a metal strip 1 to be provided with a lithographic surface is passed about a rotatable drum 4 partially submerged in electrolyte 7 and closely spaced from counter-electrodes 9. Wet grinding is effected by impinging a jet of abrasive - particles suspended in electrolyte against the strip from slot-die 5; pressure being provided by use of a gas jet 12 intermixed with the abrasive suspension stream 14. Air knives 2, 2a are provided for cleaning the strip. The strip may be connected to the current source via the drum 4 or the die 5. The electrolyte is circulated from the outlet 10 to the electrolyte supply of the die 5. The die may be operated on the air injector principle (see Fig. 2, not shown). |
