Poly:tetra:hydro:furan soln. purificn. to neutralise acid catalyst - by treatment with strongly basic anion exchange resin

Purificn. of poly(tetrahydrofuran)(PTHF) solns. accruing in the acid-catalysed polymerisation of tetrahydrofuran (THF) involves neutralisation of the acid remaining in the organic phase with OH ions, using a strongly basic anion exchanger (I) as OH ion carrier. (I) is based on a polymeric resin, pref. polystyrene, with quat. alkylammonium gps. and is used in an amt. of 5-20 (pref. 7-10) wt. % w.r.t. THF. PTHF with 2 terminal OH gps. is used in the prodn. of polyester elastomers and elastic polyurethanes. The process is simple and effective.
