Sodium alkoxycarbonyl-cyanamide prodn. free from sodium chloride - by reacting sodium hydrogen cyanamide with di:alkyl carbonate in alcoholic solution

In the prodn. of sodium alkoxycarbylcyanamides of formula Na+ RO-CO-N-CN - (I) (where R is alkyl) in solid and NaCl-free form, an alcoholic soln. of sodium hydrogen cyanamide is reacted with a dialkyl carbonate. (I) are useful as intermediates, e.g. for cyclising o-phenylenediamine cpds. to give derivs. which in turn are useful as intermediates for platn protection agents, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. Technically simple, non-polluting process giving solid, NaCl-free (I) in yields of 98-100% and good purity.
