The mechanism transfers bar-shaped items such as cigarettes, filter tips etc., from a production machine to one performing a further operation, having a controllable storage unit with inlet and outlet. They volume of this unit is controllable dependent on the proportion of the items delivered sideways in multiple layers. Downstream of it is an intermediate conveyor transporting the items sideways in several layers at a time. The intermediate conveyor (13) is mounted inside a conditioning chamber (31) having a supply pipe (32) for a conditioning medium. This chamber shields the intermediate conveyor from the space accommodating the production machine (1) and that (26) performing the further operation.
