Fuel cell cathodes comprise a high-porosity, sintered body containing a major proportion of nickel and a covering layer on the surface thereof which is to face the electrolyte consisting of a powder and a binder and being catalytically inert to the fuel. A hydrophobic layer may be formed on the opposite surface of the electrode. The powder may be of carbon, nickel oxide or aluminium oxide. In a typical example a dispersion of graphite powder and fluorocarbon resin in MeOH is applied to the surface of a sintered carbonyl Ni/active carbon electrode catalyzed with Ag and waterproofed with a fluorocarbon resin, dried and heated at 340‹ C. under N 2 . The electrode is then bonded to a casing and a tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer powder is applied to the gas side of the electrode which is used in a MeOH/Air fuel cell. The electrodes may also be used in N 2 H 4 /air and H 2 O 2 cells. |
