Cylindrical catalytic silencer - with springy axial and radial location

Silencer for monolithic catalysts, used for I. C. engine exhaust systems is assembled from identical inlet and outlet cones, joined to a centre piece with the catalyst. Both cones terminate at the wide end in a flange which fits around a springy ring. After insertion of the catalyst these two joints are made by welding. Arrangement provides simple springy support for the catalyst which is suitable for mass prodn.
