A process for the preparation of oxo-compounds of the formulae: wherein R1 and R2 are defined organic groups, comprises oxidising a compound of the formula: with an inorganic permanganate in an aqueous solvent in the presence of a buffer. Growth-promoting compounds can be prepared from the compounds of formulae I and II.
