An apparatus suitable for recovering a metal from a solution and as shown for example in Fig. 2 comprises a container 6 of inert material, a centrally disposed inlet 21 adapted to allow the solution to pass downwardly therethrough, a bed 20 of basic material and an outlet 4, closely wound shavings 7 of a metal higher in the electrochemical series being disposed in the flow path between the bed 20 and the outlet 4, the solution passing upwardly through the bed to the outlet. The apparatus may be of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinylchloride, the shavings of iron, the basic material of calcite, limestone, magnesite calcium hydroxide or dolomite the metal to be recovered, silver and the solution a waste photographic solution. The metal shavings may be wound on a plastic tube 8 such as to provide a press fit into the container 6. Several sets of metal shavings may be provided, separated from each other by apertured spacers 25, 30 which act as baffles. Two such apparatus may be used in series.</p> |
