Sealing ring for pipeline joint - has pear-shaped cross=section which eliminates any tendency of seal to roll during assembly

The sealing ring (1) for making a joint between sections (5) (6) of water mains has a pear shaped cross-section. The male pipe (5) has a tapered end which runs into a shoulder (10) which has a radius to match the larger end of the second of the sealing ring (1). The male pipe (5) with the fitted ring (1) is then inserted into the tapered bore (9) of the female pipe (6) until the sealing ring is compressed sufficiently to form an effective seal. With this shape of sealing ring there is no tendency for it to roll during assembly of the joint.
