Allantoin(I), a useful raw material for medicine and cosmetics, was prepd. by H2O2 oxidn. of glycoluril (II), obtained by the reaction of glyoxal with urea. Thus, 14g II was dissolved in H2O, adjusted to pH 5.5-6 and cooled to 60-65≦̸C to give oversaturated II soln. AgNO3 and H2O2 was added again to the resulting soln. to give 76% I.
