The process comprises the application, to the recording metal tape, of a positive charge in a mercury bath (22). Cooling of the tape follows, and the tape then passes through a negatively charged acid bath (26). As it leaves this bath (26) the tape is rid of the acid adhering thereto in a water bath (28), followed by an alcohol dewatering bath (30) and then by the winding of the tape onto a reel (34). Pneumatic cleaning devices (72, 96) are provided at the exit of the various baths, to remove the liquid from the tape surface. <IMAGE>
