<p>PURPOSE:To enable the activity of activated sludge to be readily and accurately measured by measuring the O2 utilization speed of the mixed solution in which the load of substrate is in a specific state. CONSTITUTION:Plotting the relationships between O2 utilization speed and substrate load gives the results like the figure. When the substrate load becomes above a certain fixed value, the O2 utilization speed reaches a fixed saturation value without depending upon the magnitude of sais substrate load. This enables the O2 utilization speed which may be readily measured be the activity of the activated sludge without obtaining the substrate concentration at the measurement under conditions where the substrate load is sufficiently large. When the substrate load is extremely small, i.e., in the case of internal respiration of micro-organisms, the O2 utilization speed and substrate removing rate are in a good correlation. Hence, the O2 utilization speed that may be readily measured may be made the activity of the activated sludge.</p> |
