Storage of optical signals in liq. crystal display - involves liq. crystal with long or short fibre state which acquires nematic structure

The display contains a cholesterine liquid crystal layer between two plates provided with row and column electodes. Its individual areas can be switched between two different stable states. One of the two states has a focal-conical texture featuring relatively long disinclination lines, i.e. "long fibre state". The other state has a focal-conical texture with relatively short disinclination lines i.e. a "short fibre state". The disinclination lines in the two states have such different lengths, that when a suitable voltage pulse i.e. a "discriminator pulse" is applied, the long fibre state remains unchanged, while the short fibre state takes a nematic structure.
