摘要 1393726 Forming battery plates Mc- CULLOCH CORP 20 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18356/72 Heading H1B [Also in Division G3] A method of rapidly forming battery plates comprises applying a formation current to the plates immersed in an electrolyte and intermittently applying the current in the reverse direction for a time sufficient to cause depolarization of the plates and/or electrolyte without significant discharging of the plates. Suitably the current is reversed on the occurrence of one or more changes in the characteristics of the plates as formation proceeds, e.g. the potential of either plate, the voltage between them, the amount of gassing, the composition, colour or weight of the plates, the temperature of the plates or electrolyte and the composition and specific gravity of the electrolyte. These changes may also be used to indicate completion of formation. The changes may be observed visually and the current reversed manually, or they may be monitored for automatic electrical control (Fig. 2, not shown). Alternatively, current may be reversed intermittently according to a preset programme (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The method permits much higher forming currents and shorter forming times, and the density of the forming electrolyte may be such that it may be used as the working electrolyte. Preferably the cell voltage is maintained above the decomposition potential of the electrolyte during passage of the forming current and below this but above the open circuit voltage during current reversal. The maintenance of these voltages may also be controlled automatically (Fig. 5, not shown).
