Cephalosporin C(I), broad spectrum antibiotic, was easily isolated from its fermentation broth by acylating amino group of adiphamyl branch with α-halo or α, α -dihalo C2-C4 alkanoyl group to give II. Thus, Me2CO and NaHCO3 were added to the fermentation broad contg. I at 10≦̸C, pH 8.5. Me2CO contg. Cl2CHCOCL was added, the mixt. stirred at 20≦̸C as the ph was adjusted to 3.5 while extg. with AcOEt, and quinoline added to the ext. to give II(R = Cl2CHCO2, X = quinoline).
