<p>A 1-hydroxy-steroid of the general formula (I), which is strongly gestagenic is produced by fermenting a compound of the general formula (II), with a fungal culture of a strain of a genus selected from the group consisting of Rhizoctania, Calonectria, Glomerella, Aspergillus, Corticium, Septomyxa, Mucor, Isaria, Irpex and Fusarium. The resulting 1.alpha.,17.beta.-dihydroxy-steroid can be esterified to form an alkanoyloxy group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms. In the above formulae, R, reprenents a methyl or ethyl group; R2 and R3 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and R4 represents a an ethynyl group.</p> |
