<p>A stream of molten Si is continually mixed with CO2 to form SiO, which is then mixed with O2 to form gaseous SiO2 which condenses on the walls of a chamber and is then removed from the chamber. Mixing and condensn. is pref. carried out in a chamber with a lining of SiO2, so only Si, C and O2 are present. The process is pref. carried out in two reaction zones, one being heated and fed with CO2, the other being located under the first and fed with O2. The molten Si is pref. obtd. by mixing H2 with SiHCl3 and/or SiCl4. The pref. appts. consists of an upper chamber contg. molten Si fed downwards into a chamber contg. reaction zones. Heaing- and cooling- coils are employed to provide the desired temps. The high purity of the vitreous silica obtd. depends on the quality of the raw materials, and is free from bubbles.</p> |
