The connecting rods of a swashplate engine are made from tubes (18) formed from sheet steel and seam welded. The welded tubes are then cold drawn to increase the material strength by cold working and one end of the tube is reduced in dia. The end caps (7a, 9a) are made by spinning sheet metal discs to rhe required spherical form. These end caps are then welded to the tube (18) by using the condenser discharge method which provides very high currents for short periods so that the heating is very localised and the end caps suffer no distortion. A small bore tube to form an oil way is then fitted concentrically inside the tube.
