The tunnelling machine of the main patent has an undercarriage travelling on tracks, with a cutting drum(9) rotating about a vertical axis, carrying cutters(1) which are forced against the face ahead of the machine. This drum is conical, and its support frame(4) can be tilted so that its leading face is vertical. On top of the support frame is an auxiliary frame(44) with its axis(50) vertical, hence at an acute angle to the axis(40) of the main frame. - This auxiliary frame has an upper set of cutters(41) so that a deeper cut may be made adjacent to the roof. These are mounted on a short drum section(49) which may be cylindrical, conical or spherical faced.
