Alkalimetal chromate leaching wastes were crushed in <10 mesh and mixed with a carbonaceous reducing agent (petroleum coke, coal, active carbon, heavy oil, treacle) and 1 or more Ba compds. (BaCO3, BaSO4, BaS) or Ba compd. contg. material (barite, witherite, black ore refining agent) and fired under O-poor gas at about 400-1300≦̸C, followed by cooling under N2 or dipping with water. The resulting material contd. 0 ppm water-sol. Cr.
