Process for the preparation of cyanogen which comprises effecting a continuous catalytic oxidation of hydrogen cyanide with azeotropic removal of the water produced by the reaction, at a temperature in the range of from 20.degree. to 100.degree.C in a solution containing a solvent selected from the group consisting of (a) alkyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol or glycerol,(b) tetrahydrofuran, (c) dioxane, (d) alkyl cyanides and (e) benzonitrile, which solution contains also from 0 to 20% by weight of water and as a catalyst, at least 0.01 mol/litre of copper-(II)-nitrate, said solution having a pH of from -1.0 to +3.5. The process proceeds more rapidly than most prior art processes and with increased catalyst stability.
|
