The cam shaft (1) of an internal combustion engine has an integral cam (3) which operates the inlet valve and an integral cam (10) which operates the exhaust valve. In order to improve the performance of the engine the inlet cam (3) is modified so that the inlet valve closes earlier and is restricted to an angular rotation of the crankshaft of 210 deg. to 230 deg.. At the same time the exhaust cam (10) is modified so that the exhaust valve opening is restricted to an angular rotation of the crankshaft of 225 deg. to 245 deg..
