The turf cutting machine has a digging blade (5) whose operational depth can be steplessly adjusted using a hydraulic drive (7). An overpressure valve (16) and a routing valve (17) control the hydraulic drive. Should the cutting blade strike a hard object and seize, then the oil in the hydraulic cylinder is forced out over the overpressure valve and the linkage (9) moves in a direction which is held until the crank arm (11) has attained it lower position. The digging plate (6) cuts the sod row and the operational process continues.
