The hydrophobic pasty substance is used to provide longitudinal water-tightness in the stranded cable. A cage-type machine is used for stranding and its stationary head (10) for filling the hydrophosic substance forms simultaneously the stranding member. Preferably a rotary stranding disc (30) is associated with the funnel-shaped inlet region (12) in such manner as to completely close the same. The stranding disc may be suitably connected to the stranding cage. The stranding disc may be provided with radial fins from its centre to its periphery on the side facing the inlet region, at least six such fins being provided.
