Sets of three or more rollers (36) are arranged around an imaginary axis (A) of a rod which is to be guided to a machine tool e.g. a lathe. Each set of rollers is movable to accommodate a different cross-section of roller. The rollers are connected with the associated operating unit (47) independently from one another, via a sprung shock absorber (54). The spring (58) of the shock absorber of the rollers located above the rod axis (A) is softer than that of the shock absorber of the roller below that axis. The bar feed operates without undue noise.
