The automatic referencing system has a fibre optic opto electronic detector having a receiving and transmitting channel. The system has a narrow slot reading head shared between the two channels across the receiving and transmitting fibres. The system has an "ALL OR NOTHING" electronic circuit which operates when an edge of magnetic tape is under the head or by progressive action according to variations in light received by the head.
