The switch position display is controlled by the movement of the operating element relative to the switch body. It has a reflecting element (36) and an element (28) which modifies the light and forms a light source depending on the ambient light. The frequency distribution of the incident ambient light is changed. The two elements (28, 36) move relative to each other when the operating element is moved. One of the elements (28, 36) is fixed with respect to the switch body near the other element (28, 36). The modified ambient light falls on the reflecting element when the switch is in one position while in its other position the reflecting element is illuminated exclusively by the ambient light. The light modifying element may contain a fluorecent material.
